LBN 331,DWB 177,DWB 178,DWB 179, V1488 Cyg (Cygnus)

This image is dominated by the emission nebula known as LBN 331. The bright star central in the image is 32 Cygni. 32 Cygni is a binary star system (32 Cygni A and B). The orbital plane of the two stars is nearly aligned with the line of sight to Earth. This alignment from Earth's viewpoint becomes an eclipsing variable star system known as V1488 Cyg (1147 day cycle). This emission nebula lies (visually) in a dense star region of the Milky Way. This field is also well represented in the DWB catalog - the brighter filaments of LBN 331 also have the DWB designations of DWB 179, 178, 177. (Credits: Jim Thommes)

Omicron-2 Cygni is an orange supergiant star in the constellation Cygnus. At 1,040 light years away, it is the 498th brightest star in the Earth's sky, where it shines at an apparent visual magnitude of 3.96. Omicron-2 Cygni is the primary component of a multiple-star system. The iron abundance of Omicron-2 Cygni is -0.33 (46.8% of the Sun). It is moving through the Galaxy at a speed of 10.2 km/s relative to the Sun. Its projected Galactic orbit carries it between 24,000 and 28,000 light years from the center of the Galaxy.

Common designations: Omicron-2 Cygni, 32 Cygni, HIP 99848, HD 192909, HR 7751
