Problem with ASA DDM 60 ASCOM 6.5 SP1 driver in NINA software.

Hello.
I have been using the NINA program for some time now for a complete astro-photo session.
Pretty cool program like SGP.
NINA recently released a new beta version of NINA 2.0.
NINA 2.0 has more very useful functions.
NINA 2.0 is supported by ASCOM 6.5 SP1.
Unfortunately, the ASA ASCOM DDM60 driver does not want to work with the new version of NINA 2.0
I tested the ASA ASCOM driver via the ASCOM Diagnostics program.
The ASCOM program displayed about ten ASA ASCOM driver errors.
several times I wrote to ASA technical support about this problem asking for repair of the ASCOM DDM driver.
Unfortunately, I have not received any reply.
Maybe some of you will know something about it.
I attach the ASCOM file where the problem is shown.

These are the two of us interested in repairing the ASA ASCOM driver.
You can still work with NINA version 1.10 HF3.
Unfortunately, it does not have as many functions as NINA 2.0.
I hope ASA technical department will notice this topic and release a new DDM driver.

Beside the ascom driver problem has anybody get the meridian flip to work correctly in Nina 1.10?

I tried different settings (stay on side, prefer west etc.) but Nina can't perform the flip. The mount flips just if autoslew decide to do this and no other software (Nina, Voyager)  is recognizing the flip then. Totally disappointing at the moment.

We inform the ASA company that their controller does not meet the ASCOM requirements and the ASA company simply does not care.
Perhaps the ASA company assumes that you bought our product, you are unlucky - now it's your concern.

If there's no progress from ASA themselves, it may be worthy to consider the possibility of engaging some developer or university student as some kind of project, who'll can either reverse engineer and rewrite the the software. I'm not keen on being locked down to MaximDL & PinPoint either.

Hi Wojtek,

I alredy done this, but they told me that NINA is just using plain ascom and if the the driver not passes the ascom confirmation test it's up to the mount manufacturer. That's why I sent ASA an email.  Normally I had very good support in the past from ASA. I wil! Call them next week again.

Good news regarding Ascom.

I got the information from ASA that I should use the Ascom Device Hub instead of the astrooptik Server telescope. And today I made a few test and Nina 2.0 Beta 011 works absolutely fine including the meridian flip.😀 I just tested the simple sequencer and without guiding because of day time and permanent clouds in the night. But it looks very promising.

 I hope I  helped you with this information.

Tried today to connect to DDM from NINA 2.0 11 via Ascom Device Hub.
But ASCOM Telescope Simulator Setup pops up and unfortunately I can't connect to DDM.
Can you write step by step what you do to connect to DDM.

I'm currently playing around with this as I type.

I've setup ASCOM Device Hub to connect to my DDM60's AstrooptikServer.Telescope. Thereafter, I have N.I.N.A. use the ASCOM Device Hub. It works somewhat but some ASCOM routines don't seem to be fully implemented (e.g. if I hit on Park, I can't seem to UnPark, if I use N.I.N.A.'s 3PPA to polar align, it'll slew to the 1st spot but it cannot slew to the 2nd and 3rd spots - I have to switch to manual, I also get a mount time that's way out of sync from N.I.N.A. even though I've told AutoSlew to sync to Internet time and both software is running on the same PC that's connected to the internet). 

I use Sequence/MaximDL just for MLPT which then I send to AutoSlew. Thereafter, I don't touch Sequence anymore, and just use N.I.N.A. for the acquisition scheduling, AutoFocus, FW change, etc.

Note that when parking the scope at the end of the routine, it will only use the 1st parking position in AutoSlew. So I now changed the 1st parking position to something I want, and 2nd parking position to Zenith.

Hello. My DDM 60 works well with NINA.

He rarely has parking problems using the NINA program.

I have Windows 10 installed on my computer.

I also use the Sequencer only for MLPT and then I only use the NINA program

So far I am happy with NINA.

The video shows how to properly connect DDM with NINA.

A note about MPLT & N.I.N.A, you may only get partial automation if you have to do a meridian flip. So you don't get the full benefits of N.I.N.A.

You'd have to perform MLPT manually on pre-meridian then switch to N.I.N.A. until meridian. After meridian flip, have to do another MLPT then switch back to N.I.N.A. for the 2nd half.

I think if you're working with shorter focal lengths and don't "need" MLPT, then doing an all sky AutoPoint once at the start, then switch to N.I.N.A. for the rest of the night.

If anyone has better suggestions, that'll be greatly appreciated.

So I emailed Dr.Keller and see if he can fix this conform issue

Works with Ascom 6.6 now and Drive Hub for now some strange error sometime  in a sequence run, worked fine with Ascom 6.5 SP1

Looking at Voyager automation but dont know if it is wort the money NINA is nice would be great with a target DB like Voyager

I am currently writing my own observatory software and have gained a deeper insite to ASCOM programming over the years now. I purchased the DDM60 in 2016 and was very impressed by the precise mechanics of the mount. But since I am trying to integrate the DDM60 into my observatory (complete setup with mount, two cameras, auto-guider, focuser, filter wheel, Baader Planetarium's BACHES spectrometer, optical switch, dome), a task that can only be accomplished with ASCOM, my enthusiasm with the mount has dropped to zero.

Today, ASCOM is THE standard for interfacing hardware in astronomy and even the cheapest mounts (in the 500 € range) from SkyWatcher and other vendors nicely fullfil the ASCOM standards, most of them even version Telescope-V3. Compared to them, it is an infamy what ASA offers their customers here, claiming to be a High-Tech company and therefore justifying exorbitant prices. Obviously, ASA has decided to "solve" the problems by ignoring the customer's complains (or has anybody received a positive feedback from ASA regarding fixing their AutoSlew's ASCOM interface?). I have decided to advice my Astronomy colleagues against purchasing ASA hardware at all, unless they are going to respond in a positive way. Other vendors in the same price class, like 10Micron, PlaneWave or Celestron, offer mounts of comparable precision with perfect ASCOM drivers and it is really fun to work with these. It seems that since ASA has more focused on super expensive observatory telescopes in the several 100 k€ class, they totally neglect servicing their "low cost" variants. The DDM60 is not even listed on their homepage anymore.

There is no reason to blame NINA here. NINA's programmers simply assume that an ASCOM driver fullfils its standards (this is what standards are made for, right?), but when you do so, even the simplest and mandatory ASCOM commands don't work with AutoSlew. For instance, due to the standard, the driver MUST respond to the time /date request (asking for the current time and date on the mount) or to requests of the current RA / DEC coordinates. But these are simlpy not updated at all by AutoSlew. Instead, the driver responds with a time / date from 1979 and the RA/DEC coordinates are mostly not updated (sometimes they are for reasons I never figured out). In order to use the DDM60 in my observatory at all, I am only using the most elementary commands like slewing to a target. Because AutoSlew returns immediately from the slewing command (instead of waiting until the mount has finished the slew and stated tracking) and also because the Tracking property is always turned on, there is no way to figure out (via ASCOM), when the mount has reached the target position. Therefore, after initiating a slew command, I wait for 30 seconds until starting a camera exposure. This way I can mostly avoid corrupted first exposures. But when it comes to features like automatic meridian flips or other self-evident features, ASA's ASCOM driver simply sucks! You are then forced to operate the mount manually via AutoSlew, a no-go for automated observatories.

Sorry, I know these comments are not really helping you here, since you have already purchased the DDM60, but I think we should become a little bit more aggressive here towards ASA. Nowadays, customer service is an important aspect for doing business in any field and ASA is such a negative example in this respect, in particular compared to the totally pleasant services of companies like PlaneWave, Celestron, 10Micron and others.

I believe there may be newer (Alpaca compatible?) versions of AutoSlew floating around but owners of obsolete DDM models don't have access to them (nor do I know if they are compatible to the older DDM models). I don't know if those versions of AutoSlew have improved on their ASCOM compatibility or not (which may be a moot point if those newer versions don't work on the obsolete models of DDM anyway).

Personally, I've not really imaged since owning the DDM60 over 15 months ago primarily due to the learning curve of the software and my laziness. I'm so much more familiar with N.I.N.A. and going back 'n forth between AutoSlew (setup) - N.I.N.A. (AF and 3PPA) - Sequence (Modelling & MPLT) - AutoSlew (loading of model) - N.I.N.A. (schedule acquisition) - Sequence (post meridian flip MLPT) - N.I.N.A. (schedule acquisition) has put made me lazy to image. As I have a nightly portable setup/teardown, this means that those models are temporary only for the night and have two be redone for the next night.

I'm not a software developer but I've gotten to the point where I'd even consider paying someone to write a N.I.N.A. plug-in for the DDM60.

Necroposting this thread a little, someone suggested for me to use ASCOM Remote instead of Device Hub with N.I.N.A. and I have to say that it works better.

By setting up the Astrooptik Telescope ASCOM driver under ASCOM Remote, then in N.I.N.A. connect via Alpaca the initial TrackingRate and date warnings when initially connecting no longer appears. I can also park/unpark within N.I.N.A. and that seems to work quite reliably too. Furthermore 3PPA can now move the mount (although here, the TrackingRate warning does pop up, but it doesn't stop the 3PPA routine).

So all in all, ASCOM Remote works better than Device Hub for N.I.N.A.
